What does a State of Emergency really mean anyway? Depending on the specifics of the e

mergency, it allows the Governor to access certain resources and coordinate them across the state.

Prepare, plan and stay informed.

Most of us have been through this before, it’s a fact of living in beautiful Maryland. It never hurts to review your plan. Make sure you have critical items onhand and communication open with your family members, neighbors and friends.  Don't forget the furry ones! Prepare in advance and respect the cold - The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as “Deceptive Killers.”

According to mental_floss 7 causes of death during a winter storm are:

  1. Car Accidents

  2. Slip and Falls

  3. Snow Shoveling

  4. Hypothermia

  5. Thin Ice

  6. Falling Trees and Ice

  7. Roof and Building Collapses

Critical items to have on hand:

  • Food - enough for a week.
  • Water - don't forget enough for your pets.
  • Fully Charged cell phone and battery backup if you have one.
  • Batteries
  • Medications - enough for a week.
  • Blankets
  • Warm clothes

  • Minimize travel, don’t drive if you don’t need to.
  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning occurs accidentally in blizzard conditions

Make sure generators are vented correctly.

Don’t use a grill inside.

Don’t use camp stoves, gasoline, propane, natural gas of charcoal burning inside your home, garage, crawlspace or basement

  • Stay dry
  • Dress warm in loose-fitting layered clothing.

If your home loses power or heat for more than a few hours or if you do not have adequate supplies to stay warm in your home overnight, you may want to go to a designated public shelter if you can get there safely. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (e.g., SHELTER20472).
